Promotion of Deism
Currently the world as a whole does not know there is a modern Deist movement. Sometimes the press and commentators opposed to the power the religious are having on politics will mention that many of the Founding Fathers were Deists. But to most of the world, Deism is a dead religion.
While Deism is beginning to make a come back, we still have few people that calling themselves Deists. We are slowly beginning to make some people awaken to the idea that Deism is not dead. Unfortunately, most people still do not know about Deism or only know that some of the Founding Fathers of America were Deists.
Deists don't have any dogma requiring us to spread Deism, as the revealed religions do. But many of us would like to find others with Deistic beliefs. That is why we try to promote Deism. Not to convert people, but to let those that already have Deistic beliefs, know there is a name for those beliefs and that they are not alone.
Although our efforts on the internet have been successful, we need to start considering other ways to get our message of a reasonable natural religion out to the masses. With the millions of web-sites on the internet, it is hard to get people to notice the dozen or so Deist web-sites. I am not trying to belittle the effect the web-sites have, as I do know many people have found out about the modern Deist movement through the Deist web-sites, but the web-sites can only reach a few people.
Deism does not have the financial means to buy commercial time, or have their own network, like the Christians do. This leaves us with having to find other ways of exposing the ideas of Deism to the masses. There are ways though which are cheap and don't take much time to let others know we are out here. Here are a few suggestions I would like to pass along.
Some people have the know how and means to make a video to put on UTube or MySpace. I'm sure there are other sites similar to those two where videos discussing Deism can be posted. In fact there are some on those two sites and at least one other I know of. It is something to consider if you are into making videos. It doesn't cost anything is to write letters to the editor of your local newspapers. Someone may write a letter saying that America is a Christian nation and you could respond that it is not. That many of the Founding Fathers were Deists and there is a modern Deist movement today that still believes in separation of church and state. By being imaginative, you may even find some other topics where you could bring up Deism as part of an editorial.
Some of us tried making and giving out pamphlets, but I don't know of any cases where a pamphlet made any difference. Therefore, I can't support the idea.
Deists have had some success talking one-on-one with people about Deism. But, it is hard to get many people to listen and Deists are not about trying to force their views on others. If the opportunity presents itself, there is no reason to be shy about being a Deist, for most people. I realize that many Deists are closet Deists for good reasons. But most of us, can talk about Deism to anyone who is receptive to listening about it. It is worth a try.
The Deist Alliance has recognized that Deism doesn't have much to offer people, compared with heaven and hell. But, we do have the search for truth on our side. And the Deist Alliance is working on projects to keep Deists motivated and interested. Others in the Deist Alliance are working on ways to help Deists form communities.
Frankly, I'm out of ideas. So I would like to hear any ideas that any of you may have for promoting Deism.
You can contact me Here, with any ideas you may have.
